INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jul 15, 2010
  • location   Pine Flat, Sequoia National Forest (Tulare County, California, US)
  • family Asteraceae
  • notes   Another view of a fruiting head of Orochaenactis thysanocarpha, showing the interesting pappus scales (spatulate, erose-fimbriate, hyaline, and fused into a upwardly flaring cone, deciduous as a unit fused along the base). Also visible are the drying, glandular corollas; and the finely striate black achenes (or 'cypselae').

Growing at 7350' elevation in granitic-derived soil on the western rim of Pine Flat in openings of coniferous forest, about 7.0 air kilometers ENE of Kernville...just north the Kern/Tulare County line. Here is one of three CCH records by Twisselmann from nearby.

The FNA treatment is at this link. First described (in Latin) as Chaenactis thysanocarpha by Asa Gray in 1883, it was given the new combination of Orochaenactis thysanocarpha by Coville in 1893, and his detailed descriptions of the monotypic genus & species begins at the bottom of the page here...and is nicely illustrated in detail on Plate X here.
