location
Pilot Rock area (Jackson County, Oregon, US)family
Polemoniaceae
notes View showing the diaphanous character of the inflorescences. These plants were abundant south of the parking lot for Pilot Rock trailhead, in the open 'serpentine-like' substrate area (actually not serpentine, but derived from Tertiary mafic basalt flows, dikes, or plugs...cf. here). Pilot Rock is a prominent volcanic plug not far from I-5 and the California border. Although I was in Oregon, I was just over the border from California, so I consulted the Jepson eFlora Key to Leptosiphon which led to some ambiguity between L. harknessii, L. septentrionalis, and L. filipes...since my photos didn't show enough detail to discern whether or not a 'hairy ring' was present inside the corolla. The current Oregon Flora Project checklist for Polemoniaceae suggested the only good candidates were the first two. But I cross referenced by keying in Abrams's ''Illustrated Flora of the Pacific States', which treated all three of the candidate species, and led to L. harknessii. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
