Mt. Kanin mountain group, few meters below Forca Tedesca pass, below Mt. Hudi Vršič, 2.478 m (8.130 feet), very close to Slovenia- Italy border line, Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)notes Slo.: križanec med rumenim in modrim miljem - syn.: Paederota-bonarota-x-Paederota-lutea - Habitat: rocks and scree with scattered patches of grassland, almost vertical south oriented mountain slope; bare, calcareous ground; full sun; elevation 2.340 m (7.678 feet); average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature ~ 0 deg C, alpine phytogeographical region. Substratum: soil in rock crevices. Comment: There are only two species of genus Paederota: pale-yellow blooming Paederota lutea and intensive, dark blue blooming Paederota bonarota. Both are endemic to southeast Alps and both grow in Slovenia. Paederota lutea is a common plant of high mountains while Paederota bonarota is quite rare and in Slovenia limited to mountains of Upper Soča river region (west most Slovenian Alps). Where both species are coexisting they sometimes hybridize. The result is plants with intermediate traits of both parents. The most apparent is the color of flowers, which is somewhere in between pale yellow and deep blue. Such are also the leaves in respect to their shape, number of dents on their edge and color (yellow-green with many, sharp dents on each side with Paederota lutea and shiny, dark green, broadly egg shaped to almost round with only a few large dents with Paederota bonarota). The plants photographed seem closer to Paederota bonarota; however color of the flowers is evidently different. The hybrid has been found several times in Slovenia so far. Finds from Mangart's plateau and Upper Trenta valley have been described in literature (Ref.: 1, 2, 3). Only a few plants were found this time on Forca Tedesca with a single inflorescence. Most probably this was my first and the last encounter with this interesting mountain rarity. Ref.: (1) Personal communication.
