location
Along Bear Creek Road across road from entrance to SCICON. (Tulare County, California, US)notes Flowers of the rare (and state & federally listed) Clarkia springvillensis. There were relatively few of these still in flower, growing together with the much more abundant (and still prolifically flowering) Clarkia cylindrica ssp. clavicarpa, and also some C. speciosa ssp. polyantha. Also present down the road was Clarkia unguiculata, which has a flower roughly similar to Clarkia springvillensis, but differs (among other things) in having conspicuously long hairs on the fruits. As with so many wildland habitats I've visited this year, the density and height of our many invasive, non-native grasses (Bromus diandrus, B. tectorum, Lolium, Avena, etc.) seemed much worse than in the past...with the flowers and foliage of most herbaceous native forbs nearly completely buried beneath the grass thatch. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
