  • notes   Slo.: sibirska perunika - syn.: Iris sibirica s.str. L. - Date.: June 2. 2011 Habitat: moist grassland with some bushes and trees, flat terrain, open, sunny place, calcareous ground, elevation 850 m (2.800 feet); average precipitations 1.800 - 2.200 mm/year, average temperature 5 - 7 deg C, alpine phytogeographical region. Comment: Greek word iris means rainbow. Indeed flowers of the plants belonging to genus Iris are very beautifully colored and unique with its unusually shaped and bowing petals. In addition Iris sibirica ssp. sibirica usually occurs in large populations, which display unforgettable vistas when in bloom. Slovenian and Croatian common name of this plant also points to its beauty. The word 'perunika' is named after important Slavic pagan god Perun. Species name sibirica was given to the plant by Carl Linné because it can be found also in Siberia. Gardeners have created many popular cultivars. Some of them are capable to escape gardens, eventually hybridize and sometimes pose problems for plant determinations. Iris sibirica ssp. sibirica grows in wet habitats and hence it is seriously endangered because of gradually losing its habitats. It is protected in many countries. This Euro-Siberian floral element can be found mainly in east part of the Alpine region, it mainly grows in lowland and less often reaches montane elevations. Protected according to: Uredba o zavarovanih prostoživečih rastlinskih vrstah, poglavje A, Uradni list RS, št. 46/2004 (Regulation of protected wild plants, chapter A, Official Gazette of Republic Slovenia, no. 46/2004), (2004). Pravilnik o uvrstitvi ogroženih rastlinskih in živalskih vrst v rdeči seznam, Uradni list RS, št. 82/2002 (Regulation of enlisting of endangered plant and animal species onto Red List, Official Gazette of Republic Slovenia, no. 82/2002) (2002). Enlisted in the Slovene Red List of rare and endangered species, marked by 'V' representing a vulnerable species. Ref.: (1) M.A. Fischer, W. Adler, K.
