location
Near the Monterey Airport (Monterey County, California, US)notes I feel strongly that this variety should not have been removed from second edition of the Jepson Manual. The bractlets, calyx, and corolla are very different from the from the two other varieties. This plant was found growing between 2 parking lots of an office building. I suspect it is a residual specimen that was growing there before the area was developed. Note from Keir Morse 2020-02-15: Varieties of M. palmeri were given the rank of species as M. palmeri, M. lucianus, and M. involucratus in 2021. A key to these species can be found in Morse, K. 2021. A Morphological Assessment of the Malacothamnus palmeri Complex (Malvaceae). Crossosoma 44(1 & 2): 1–27, which is available here: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/349255287.photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
