  • date of photo  Feb 14, 2016
  • location   Warm Springs Road, at crossing with Anvil Spring Wash, Death Valley National Park (Inyo County, California, US)
  • family Asteraceae
  • notes   While not showy, Logfia and other ''disciform' members of the Asteraceae have an interesting inflorescence/floral structure which is fun to study and work out under a dissecting microscope.

In the full-size version of this image (see the ''high-resolution image'' Flickr link below) three mature flower heads are visible. The heads at left and center exhibit 5 reflexed paleae and a number of tiny, smooth cypselae. In the mature head at just above-right of center you can see the narrow tops of two disk flowers, surrounded by pappus bristles.

A number of heads are also visible in early flower (as cream-yellow tipped, basally flaring, terminal or axillary cylindrical structures).

For scale, my thumbnail in the image is 15mm long.
