location
Mt. Kanin region, 'Gozdec' slopes, near the end of dirt forest road toward Mt. Kopa and above it, East Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)notes Slo.: zelena mušnica - Habitat: mixed alpine wood, Fagus sylvatica dominant tree; moderately inclined mountain slope, southeast aspect; calcareous ground; in shade, humid and relatively warm place; partly protected from direct rain by tree canopies; average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 3-5 deg C, elevation 1.150 m (3.800 feet), alpine phytogeographical region. Substratum: forest soil. Comments: This observation seemed to me too yellowish to be an Amanita phalloides at first and I wrongly determined it as Amanita citrina (with some reservations; for example, uncharacteristic volva and completely washed off remnants of universal veil from the cap). Amanita phalloides is a very common mushroom in the woods where I live but they are usually paler with more greenish tint. Thanks to Davide Puddu and Vasco Fachada at MO and based on fibrillose cap and un-circumcised volva I am now convinced that Amanita phalloides is the correct determination. Growing solitary; a few pilei widely scattered in the vicinity; smell distinctive, unpleasant, on earth and chemicals, taste not determined; SP abundant, white. Spores smooth, subglobose. Dimensions: 8,1 [9,2 ; 9,7] 10,8 x 6,9 [7,6 ; 7,9] 8,7 microns; Q = 1,1 [1,2] 1,4; N = 40; C = 95%; Me = 9,5 x 7,8 microns; Qe = 1,2. Motic B2-211, NEA100x/1.25, magnification 1.000 x, oil; in water; in vivo. Nikon D70 camera. Ref.: (1) Personal communication with Mr. Bojan Rot, Davide Puddu and Vasco Fachada. (2) R.M.
