INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Apr 16, 2015
  • location   Parkfield Grade (Fresno County, California, US)
  • family Fabaceae
  • notes   Flower heads and leaves of Trifolium 'ultramaficum', growing in serpentine-derived (i.e. ultramafic) soil on an east-facing roadcut a few miles north of the Parkfield Grade summit. Dark spots on the tips of the keel & wings are barely visible here, as is an interesting leaf pattern.

Using the Jepson eFlora Key to Trifolium to ID these plants, I arrived at Trifolium fucatum. However, Santa Cruz, CA, naturalist and Trifolium worker Randall Morgan...who has been doing thoughtful research and meticulous observation & analysis of the genus for many years: incorporating extensive field work; countless growing experiments; and (with a collaborator) correlation with molecular data...has come to recognize that the traditional 'species' T. fucatum comprises a complex of distinct taxa which he has worked to more coherently recircumscribe. The constituent of this complex seen here he refers to as T. ultramficum, and this is his type locality for that taxon.

We visited another locality for T. ultramaficum on serpentine earlier in the day along highway CA-198, about 6 miles east of junction with CA-25 in Monterey County. Two other records for the taxon from Santa Barbara County (which I believe are also on ultramafic substrates) appear in the UC Riverside Herbarium records here and here.

Since the name T. ultramaficum has not yet been formally published, I'm posting this under the closest currently valid name, T. fucatum.
