  • location   Mt. Mangart flats, mountain pass between Mt. Mangart and Mt. Mali vrh, East Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)
  • notes   Slo.: polegla alpska azalea - syn.: Azalea procumbens - Habitat: Alpine pasture on a high mountain pass, almost flat terrain, calcareous ground but with some silicate, acid ground (growing next to Vaccinium gaultherioides and other acid soil lovers), dry place, full sun, exposed to strong winds and direct rain, average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 0-2 deg C, elevation 1.920 m (6.300 feet), alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comment: Loiseleuria procumbens is a rare plant in Slovenia. This beautiful plant blooms very early on Mangart flats. While on ridges where it grows the snow is mainly swept away by winds and the rest already melts away, the rest of the mountain is still under deep snow cover and hence more difficult to access. For many years I've been always too late at the place where I took these pictures. The plants were usually already in seeds. This year (2015) I was early enough. There was not much snow this year in the Julian Alps. While Mangart's alpine road was formally still closed in May, it was passable to a point, which was about an hour of walking over snow covered flanks away of the spot. On May 11. the plants were still in buds (picture 10.), a week later they were in full bloom. The efforts paid off. - Ref.: (1) M.A. Fischer, W. Adler, K.
