location
On a burn zone on Burton Mesa (Santa Barbara County, California, US)notes Off the burn this spring, all plants seen of this species remain in rosette phase. But only reproductive individuals were seen on the burn. Rosettes (elsewhere) are super-abundant this year, because last year all (apparently) individuals, which were all (apparently) in rosette phase since 2010, went into reproductive mode without benefit of fire, then they all (apparently) died. Hence, the peak crop of rosettes this year. Trigger may be late rains, as 2013-2014 season was very dry but had late rains. 2008-2009 was an unusually wet rainy season, and the species bolted and bloomed. Since moving to Lompoc in Dec 2004, I have seen only 2 bloom years, apart from this year on the burn only. One might posit that this unusual life-history strategy (as dimly perceived by me so far) evolved because rosettes have higher survivability than achenes.photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
