INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jul 5, 2014
  • latitude 46.37467   longitude 13.58438     View on Google Maps.
  • location   Koritnica valley, left bank of river Koritnica, above the main road to Predel pass, upstream of Možnica settlement, East Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)
  • notes   Slo.: gostocvetni kukavičnik - Habitat: moderately overgrown torrent deposits in a broad mountain ravine, west inclined mountain slope, calcareous ground, open fairly sunny place, fairly dry place, exposed to direct precipitations, average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 7-9 deg C, elevation 525 m (1.700 feet), alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: soil. - Comment: Species Gymnadenia splendida is a rather new taxa name, which is according to Ref.:1. broadly accepted today. Formerly it was known on subspecies or variation taxonomical level (depending on author) as Gymnadenia conopsea ssp. densiflora or Gymnadenia conopsea var. densiflora. However, even such taxonomy had not been accepted by all authors (for example not by Flora Alpina, Ref.3.). - The main differences between Gymnadenia splendida and Gymnadenia conopsea ssp. conopsea are: the first one is a taller plant, has denser inflorescence with more flowers and has larger ground leaves. According to Ref.:2. Gymnadenia splendida grows in wet habitats. Habitus of the plant photographed corresponds well to the descriptions of Gymnadenia splendida. It had 94 flowers in its inflorescence and was slightly more than 1 m tall. But habitat doesn't fit. The place where it grows is rather dry in spite of the fact that it is not far from a torrent and very high amount of precipitations in this region. It is possible that pros would recognize it as a very large and proliferate Gymnadenia conopsea ssp. conopsea regarding the number of flowers. - Protected according to 'Uredba o zavarovanih prosto živečih rastlinskih vrstah', Ur.l.RS, št.46/2004 (Regulation on protected wild plants, Official gazette of Republic of Slovenia, No. 46/2004). Enlisted in the Slovene Red List of rare and endangered species, marked by 'V' representing a vulnerable species. - Ref.: (1) Personal communication with Mr. Miha Kosec. (2) H. Haeupler, T.
