plant community Serpentinenotes This is a photo of a new species of Calystegia that has been discovered in central California. Preliminary molecular evidence indicates that Calystegia vanzuukiae is a species of hybrid origin, with parent species identified as C. stebbinsii and C. occidentalis. Distribution: Placer and El Dorado Counties in open mixed, coniferous woodland, on serpentine or gabbro soils. Bractlets tend to look like leaves (i.e., if the leaves are narrowly lobed, the bractlets are generally narrowly lobed too). Specimens in El Dorado and Placer Counties formerly identified as Calystegia occidentalis ssp. fulcrata are likely to be C. vanzuukiae.camera Nikon Coolix P7700
