  • date of photo  Jul 2, 2014

  • location   Mangart's flats, almost of top of Mt. Mali vrh, East Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)
  • notes   Slo:. zeleni volčji jezik - syn.: Habenaria viridis (L.) R. Br. - Habitat: alpine pasture, low nutrition skeletal calcareous ground, modestly east inclined mountain slope, dry sunny place, exposed to direct rain and winds, average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 0-2 deg C,elevation 1.940 m (6.350 feet), alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: skeletal calcareous soil. - Comment: This small orchid can easily be overlooked in the greenery of high mountain pastures. However, it is not a really rare species in Julian Alps. Its small greenish to reddish flowers somehow 'disappear' in the community of much more attractive flowers of highly colorful alpine grassland in July. But, when observed from 'on the belly' perspective it is beautiful and also ease to recognized. Most distinct traits are three lobed lip with smaller middle section and broad ground and steam leaves. These two trait easily distinguish it from much rarer, but superficially similarly looking, Chamorhis alpina, which can also be found on Mangart's flats. The latter has simple lip and narrowly lanceolate to linear ground leaves and no stem leaves. Coeloglossum viride is in sharp decline in lower elevations in Slovenia. It hasn't been observed for decades and is probably extinct in some parts of Slovenia. - Growing solitary but several plants scattered around. - Protected according to 'Uredba o zavarovanih prostoživečih rastlinskih vrstah' Ur.l. RS, št. 46/2004 (Regulation on protected wild plants, Official gazette of Republic of Slovenia, No. 46/2004). Enlisted in the Slovene Red List of rare and endangered species, marked by 'V' representing a vulnerable species. - Ref.: 1) M.A. Fischer, W. Adler, K.
