Lower Trenta valley, next to the road Bovec-Trenta, between villages Soča and Trenta, near 'Otokar', Trenta 4 farm house, East Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)notes Slo.: toga smiljka - syn.: Cerastium arvense ssp. strictum (Haenke) Gaudin - Habitat: once per year mowed sandy grassland, sandy roadside, flat terrain, calcareous ground, full sun, dry place, exposed to direct rain, average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 7-9 deg C, elevation 530 m (1.750 feet), alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: sandy soil. - Comment: Many members of the large genus Cerastium seem to me extraordinarily tender and beautiful, particularly those which grow in the harshest high mountain conditions in subalpine and alpine elevation. The striking contrast between this apparent inner tenderness and outer austerity seems absurd, not in a sense of something, which is not true or possible, but in a sense of something, which goes beyond human reason. Cerastium strictum is not a high alpine plant; nevertheless it is not less beautiful. The plants photographed certainly belong to the group Cerastium arvense agg., but splitting this aggregate down to species level with certainty is yet un unresolved problem for me. Different botanists have different approaches to this taxonomically critical group and hence it is not surprising that Ref.:(1), which divides this aggregate into four species, openly admits that the key presented is rather an attempt than a final solution and that this group obviously requires further detailed studies. In spite of this following this key and, based on relatively low plants and short leaves of about 15 mm length (the most probable alternative Cerastium arvense ssp. arvense has up to 40 mm long leaves) I decided for Cerastium arvense ssp. strictum. - Ref.: (1) M.A. Fischer, W.
