Northwest end of Coyote Dry Lake, NE of Barstow (San Bernardino County, California, US)family
Boraginaceae
notes Growing in alkali flats at the NW edge of Coyote Lake. Initially mistook this for Phacelia parishii due to the location and habitat. But it keys to P. pachyphylla (petioles > leaf blades; stalked dark glands; fruit elongate-ovoid). Both species grow in the same area/habitat (cf. Tim Thomas's comment here). An annual, this plant is far along in its development...a bit late here to get an image of showier foliage and flower...but the plump fruits and densely dark-glandularity are interesting. I guess this is what the plants look like in a tough year...winter/spring of 2014 was mostly quite dry and with some unfavorably timed periods of high and low temps.photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
