BLM Sand Mountain Recreation Area (Churchill County, Nevada, US)notes These dunes, two miles long and more than 400 ft. high, have accumulated along the southwestern flank of the Stillwater Mountains along the edge of ancient Lake Lahontan. The Pleistocene lake dried up about 9,000 years ago. Since then, prevailing winds have carried sand from the lakebed northeast and deposited it againt the Stillwater Range.keywords: earth science, geology, Pleistocece, Quaternary, erosion, deposition
