  • date of photo  Jul 8, 2010
  • location   Wheeler Gorge, approx. 8 miles north of Ojai (Ventura County, California, US)
  • family Campanulaceae
  • notes   Detail of flowers...frontal view. Note that the flower at lower-right has what appear to be to purple stigma lobes unfurled (looking like fat little lips saying 'kiss me' :-). I'm guessing these flowers are protandrous, i.e. the male anthers open and release pollen before the female stigmas become receptive to pollen (a phenomenon promoting out-crossing). Note the other flowers appear to still be in the anther stage here.
