notes Slo.: srčastolistni muhovnik - Habitat: mossy moist area in forests of conifers, almost pure Picea abies stands, acid ground, almost flat terrain, full shade, moist place, partly protected from direct rain by tree canopies, average precipitations ~ 2.500 mm/year, average temperature 2-4 deg C, elevation 1.200 m (4.000 feet), alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: acid forest soil. - Comment: One of the smallest and the rarest orchids of Slovenia. Hard to find because of their smallness and their color which blends well with the ground and surrounding vegetation. Generally a very widespread species over the colder areas and mountains of north hemisphere but nowhere common. Growing usually in 'large' groups of some tens of species. The plants are best appreciated with a magnifying lens. They are very beautiful when seen up close. Much of the life and reproduction of this plant is still unknown.
