  • notes   Five large, spiny, spherical fruits of the vine Marah horridus are visible here (4 green and 1 straw colored). Backlit leaves of Marah are also visible at center and lower right. This plant was straggling up and dangling from a small tree (either ceanothus or an oak). All parts of Marah plants are bitter...with the seeds reputed to be extraordinarily so. (One lick can prove fatal...just joking :-)
