notes Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is the sprawling, low-growing to mounding, white-flowering shrub in the foreground. It's growing on a ascending slope here, which gives the illusion that it's taller than its actual height in this photo...it's probably not much more than a foot high. It's growing here on a rocky ridge with coyote brush (Baccharis pilularis) and blue-blossom (Ceanothus thyrsiflorus), and all grow relatively low and compact due to the frequent cold westerly winds that blow here. This is probably what is called A. uva-ursi forma coactilis in the ''Flora of the San Bruno Mountains'' by McClintock, Reeberg, & Knight (1990).photo category: Plant - shrub
