Saxifragaceae
plant community Rocky lowland tundra, alpine tundra, and cliffsnotes Circumpolar. Widespread in arctic-alpine zones, north to 83°N in Greenland, and south to the Alps, Rocky Mtns, and high peaks of n Britain. Grows on moist, calcium-rich gravels and on wet cliffs; 0–3250 ft (0–1000 m). Height 2–3 in (5–7.5 cm). Low-growing, densely or loosely matted plant, with somewhat woody, creeping or trailing branches. Leaves: Basal rosette of small, scale-like, opposite, linear, leathery, 4-ranked leaves with bristle-edged margins. Flowers: Purple to lilac, rarely white, elliptic to oval, to 0.5 in (1.5 cm) across, solitary on short stalks. Begins to flower in early spring and continues to flower for the entire summer in places where snow persists.keywords: saxifrage
