INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jun 12, 2011
  • latitude 46.33411   longitude 13.52978     View on Google Maps.
  • location   Bovec basin, west of Bovec, near the trail from station A of the Kanin cable car to village Plužna, East Julian Alps (Posočje, Slovenia)
  • notes   Habitat: Mixed forest, deciduous trees dominant, flat terrain, cretaceous clastic rock (flysh) bedrock, in shade, relatively moist place, partly protected from direct rain by tree canopies, average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 8-10 deg C, elevations 410 m (1.350 feet), alpine phytogeographical region. - Substratum: thick dead branch of Corylus avelana laying on ground still in bark. The same branch was also infected with Plicaturopsis crispa, Tremella mesenterica, Tectella patellaris and Hypoxilon fuscum. - Comments: Uncertain determination! Phanerochaete sanguinea can be found the whole year around, but it prefers coniferous wood and is often found on pines but also can be found on hardwood. Thanks to Gerhard Koller and Irene Andersson on MO (see Mushroom Observer observation #84963 for discussion) for mentioning several other possibilities. Sillia ferruginea and Cryptospora corylina seems to be less probable due to quite different color. Massariosphaeria rubicunda is another option, but it is more purple and rather on thicker substrata. It can also be either a fungus imperfectus like Paecilomyces sp. or maybe Cistella sp. that colors the hymenia of poroid fungi red. Notice that Plicaturopsis crispa is also colored red. The red on the Plicaturopsis could also be Hypomyces rosellus, but it presumably doesn’t stain wood red. - References: (1) Personal communication with Gerhard Koller and Irene Andersson on MO.
