  • notes   Upper portion of inflorescence of Streptanthus polygaloides, growing on a serpentine substrate on nearly solid rock.

    This species is distinctive in:

    1) Its relatively large, round, wavy-edged, ''clam shell-like'' upper and lower sepals...which give rise to the epithet 'polygaloides' (= Polygala-like); and,

    2) It is a remarkable hyperaccumulator of Ni (the chemical element Nickel) which apparently provides defense against herbivory by selected organisms (see this paper for details).
