| Reviewer's comments: | | | | "Of course not possible to see the beaked keel, but this is the only large-flowered "variegatoid" occurring on the coast. T. app. has been collected from Monterey Pen. to Humboldt Co., however I know of no recent records north of Pt. Reyes. A good record of a rare plant, particularly since you also show the white variant that occurs sporadically in many clover species - I happen to have seed collections of the white forms of the 2 large-fld relatives of this (phaeocephalum and melananthum) but not of this sp. The treatments of this complex of similar-looking but biologically separate species in JM1 and JM2 is entirely artificial, based only on flower size (!) You seem to have a talent for finding interesting plants!" |
