location
Sutter Buttes. North of Sutter (Sutter County, California, US)notes The Sutter Buttes are an isolated volcanic feature towering nearly 2000 ft. above the otherwise flat farmland of the Sacramento Valley. The Buttes, seen here from the eastern side, are composed of a series of rhyolite and andesite domes intruded into the Cretaceous sediments underlying much of the valley. Some of the plumes of magma erupted explosively during the early Pleistocene about 1.6 to 1.4 million years ago while other plumes never reached the surface. Although the Buttes appear from a distance to be a small linear mountain range, they sit at the center of a complex circular structure about 10 miles in diameter.keywords: geology, earth science, geomorphology, volcano, eruption, intrusion
