location
Near BLM Fossil Falls Recreation Area. South of Coso Junction (Inyo County, California, US)notes Red Hill is a basaltic cinder cone of recent origin in the Coso Volcanic Field. It formed about 10,000-14,000 years ago. A smaller eruption may have occurred from a side vent 400-600 years ago. The Coso Volcanic Field is in an area of crustal thinning and extension. The location of individual volcanic domes and cinder cones in this volcanic field is probably fault-controlled. This cone is being mined for cinders used in the manufacture of cinder block and as aggregate for road-building.keywords: geology, earth science, geomorphology, volcano, volcanism, eruption, Pleistocene
