Fabaceae
notes Somewhat congested infructescences of a robust individual growing amidst open desert scrub on a rocky hillside...in what appeared to be a shallow old mine pit or small quarry. We didn't key it in the field, where it reminded me of A. mohavensis, but that was a reckless guess which was later corrected by field trip members Tom Chester and RT Hawke. Going through the JM2 Astragalus key I arrived at Astragalus lentiginosus var. fremontii, as Tom and RT suggested. Perhaps the most obvious difference between this and A. mohavensis is the number of leaflets...this plant had a fairly consistent count of 16-17 leaflets per leaf, whereas A. mohavensis has 3-11. Beyond that, the deeply, dimpled, dumpling-like fruits...with relatively long beaks...are a fairly distinctive character of A. lentiginosus var. fremontii (and apparently many other A. lentiginosus varieties, from a perusal of the figures in the Intermountain Flora). This plant also had a relatively large number of flowers per inflorescence (around 20) and longish banners making an angle close to 45° with the axis of the wings/keel...also characters of A. lentiginosus var. fremontii. It was found near the location of the voucher here. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
