  • notes   This is the second year I have found animal body parts in my yard. I contacted a Washington State Game Warden previously to find out what was killing the various array of dead animals - weasel, vole, mole, rabbit. The warden informed me that a great horned owl was the culprit. The owl rips the head and guts, fur, tail and legs from the body, then consumes the torso as the photo proves. After hunting in a tree farm nearby, the owl perches in a large western red cedar tree in my yard and discards the parts not eaten - in this case, an Eastern cottontail rabbit. UPDATE: I am inclined to believe that a barred owl, not great horned owl, killed the animals in question as the animal body parts stopped accumulating in my yard after I found a dead barred owl, killed by a car, in my driveway. The Summer nighttime hooting also stopped. What a shame.
