notes This annual keyed to Eriophyllum ambiguum var. ambiguum in the joint Kern County key/flora by Moe & Twisselman. Twisselman stated it's ''common in the Greenhorn range...growing mostly in the Doulglas Oak woodland''. The site here was at ~ 5500' elevation on a large, open, south-facing bank within surrounding mixed Conifer-Black Oak woodland...considerably above the bulk of the foothill Douglas Oak woodland zone. (Though the Jepson Manual lists the elevation range of Blue Oak as < 1590 m = 5215 feet...and Twisselmann did use the qualifier ''most'' :-). The Jepson Manual and FNA list the elevation range of E. ambiguum var. ambiguum as 200-1900 m, which would include the site here. The illustration in Fig 5374 in Abrams is a reasonable fit....I can't find other visual comparisons for variety ambiguum elsewhere on the web. This is a smaller-flowered and apparently less-commonly encountered (or at least noticed) plant than the other variety...the larger-flowered E. a. var. palaceum. (Though the plants in this post look intermediate between the two varieties.)photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
