notes Detail of the inflorescence of the plant in this accompanying post. The perianths here were mostly white with thin magenta mid-ribs. Another plant nearby had a white perianth infused with much more rose-magenta color than seen here. Using the JM2 key...the single cylindrical leaf; included stamens; entire, white perianth; and location...make Allium diabolense the only reasonable determination here. I'm somewhat troubled by having to go with 'Stigma lobes 3' at couplet 4' of the key, as it appears the stigma lobes are +/- 0 in my images. But perianth color and widely disjunct geographic distribution eliminate all the candidates under the alternate choice. Perhaps the degree to which the stigma lobes develop and become visibly apparent depends on how far along the flower is phenologically? Growing on serpentine substrate. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
