notes The long-spined, ovate, inflorescence bracts are characteristic of this mint family genus. The placement of the stigmas...exserted from the upper hood of the corolla...seem to be positioned to pick up pollen from the back of an incoming pollinator (bumble-bee or moth?). The pollinator could later get dusted with pollen on the same area of the back, after it crawls further into the corolla to get nectar at the inner base of the tube. With the stigmas exserted, the pollen from previously visited flowers would contact the stigmas before the pollinator crawled further in and picked up pollen from the given flower...in this way the placement of stigmas and anthers might encourage cross-pollination. Plants were growing here, as is often the case, on a serpentine substrate. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
