Sparta (Randolph County, Illinois, US)notes These pyrite 'suns' or 'dollars' are found between layers of slate interbedded with coal deposits formed in Pennsylvanian time about 300 million years ago. They are believed to be concretions that have been flattened or forced to grow laterally between layers of slate by the pressure of deep burial.
