location
Bays Mountain, Tenn. (Sullivan County, Tennessee, US)habitat along slow moving stream, deciduous/evergreen forest - oaks, birch, Virginia hemlock, etc.notes While visiting relatives I took a hike to Bays Mountain. Walking along 'fern' path around 11:00 am, I found this 30+ inch garter snake sunning in 52 degree weather 3 feet from a small stream. The temperature just a few hours earlier was 27 degrees. The preserve's ecologist told me it is not uncommon for all snakes in this region to come out when sun is available. He cited times he has seen snakes curled up sunning on dry rocks with snow surrounding them.camera Canon PS SX20IS
