INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Aug 8, 2011
  • location   BLM Fish Slough Area. North of Bishop (Inyo County, California, US)
  • notes   These volcanic tablelands in the Owens Valley north of Bishop are carved into the Bishop Tuff. The formation, which is 600 feet thick in places, was formed in a matter of days from rhyolitic ash ejected during an enormous eruption 760,000 years ago at Long Valley, about 20 miles north. The Long Valley eruption released about 150 cu. miles of ash and molten rock -- more than 2,500 times the amount released during the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens.
