location
Near Taft Point. Yosemite National Park (Mariposa County, California, US)notes These joints are part of a regional system of widely-spaced, vertical master joints that are responsible for most of the distinctive sheer cliffs lining Yosemite Valley. Regional master joints are the result of stress produced by the tectonic forces involved in the tilting and uplift of the modern Sierra. The Sentinel Granodiorite was formed by the intrusion of magma during the Cretaceous period, about 93 million years ago. Development of these joints occurred over the last 40 million years during the uplift of the modern Sierra.keywords: geology, earth science. tectonics, uplift, joints, jointing
