INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Mar 27, 1982
  • this photo depicts an animal that was captive or collected
  • photo location   San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina
  • animal's place of origin   Depto. Alumine, Rahue (Prov. Neuquén, Argentina)
  • family Leptodactylidae
  • order Anura
  • class Amphibia
  • notes   Female. The common name for this species is 'four-eyed frog' ('rana de cuatro ojos' in Spanish). This is because of the enlarged glandular pads on lower back that can appear to be 'eyes'when seen from the rear. They are much larger than the real eyes, and perhaps this causes a potential predator to think that the animal is much larger than actual.
