  • family Batrachylidae
  • order Anura
  • class Amphibia
  • notes   Male. Atelognathus praebasalticus is almost certainly the same 'species' as A. patagonicus. The original describers of this species mistakenly assumed that because these animals had a different appearance to their skin and were captured on land instead of in the water, that they were a different species. Molecular genetic studies show that the aquatic and terrestrial Atelognathus from this locality are genetically identical, with the morphological differences resulting from the different requirements to live in these two different habitats. This is an interesting case of an ecological 'polymorphism'.
