INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jun 24, 2003
  • location   Near Bass Lake (Madera County, California, US)
  • family Onagraceae
  • plant community   Opening in lower montane mixed coniferous forest
  • notes   Note that both the inner and outer whorls of (four) stamens have dehisced in the lower (older) flower here, and its cross-like stigma (exserted beyond the stamens) is unfurled and receptive. In the younger upper flower here, the inner whorl of stamens has already dehisced, but the outer whorl is just beginning to...and the stigma is obscured behind the upper petal of the older flower.

Some of the characters that identify this as Clarkia dudleyana are: Axis of inflorescence in bud recurved at tip; buds pendant; sepals remaining fused in 4's; corolla bowl-shaped; petals large, obovate, pale pink with no large spots but with purple speckles; petal claw not broad and without side lobes; stamens 8, inner four paler, outer four +/- lavender; stigma exserted beyond anthers; ovary/immature fruit 8-grooved. The habitat (openings in woodlands or forests) and location are also consistent with C. dudleyana (there are a number of records from Bass Lake area on the Calif. Consortium of Herbaria web page.)
