notes Note the different lengths of filaments and anthers for the outer vs. inner stamens. The tall, erect stems of these plants, together with the straight inflorescence tips, the more or less erect buds, and characters of the fruit and flowers lead (incorrectly, I believe) to C. purpurea ssp. quadrivulnera in the JM2 Clarkia key. However, it keys to C. epilobioides in ''The Flowering Plants of Monterey County'' by Mary Ann (Corky) Matthews (mainly from the pure white-to-cream corolla without purple flecks). After researching a bit, I believe this is probably the correct ID. C. epilobioides is said to be fairly variable, and one of the few Clarkia species with pure white flowers and anthers (perhaps the only one?). According to various references, the anthers and stigmas of C. epilobioides mature simultaneously and the flowers are largely (if not obligately) self-pollinated. photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
