notes Profile detail of a flower of Nemacladus montanus. These flowers remind me of ''flying fox'' faces :-) The brownish ''eyes'' are the glands of the flowers, which secrete nectar. The ''snout'' is the stamen tube, formed from fused filaments. At the base of each of the upper two filaments are about 5 short translucent rod-like appendages...providing glamorous ''eye-lashes'' :-) At the tip of the snout here are the dehiscing anthers, with yellow pollen. The pinkish-red and yellow spots on the upper three corolla lobes are very similar to those of the species N. interior, which typically grows on granitic substrates in montane coniferous forest habitats west of the crest in the Sierra Nevada. The plants here were growing on a rocky serpentine substrate surrounded by very open chaparral with scattered Gray Pines (Pinus sabiniana). photo category: Plant - annual/perennial
