INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jul 18, 2009
  • location   Capitol Reef National Park (Wayne County, Utah, US)
  • notes   Mouth of Surprise Canyon. This narrow canyon is one of many impassable dead-ends cut into the Capitol Reef. This opening on the east-facing side of the reef, a monocline dipping toward the camera, slices through more than 1000 feet of Navajo Sandstone. The formation was created from Sahara-like dunes during the early Jurassic period, about 200 million years ago. The Navajo Sandstone (white) is overlain here by the softer red-brown siltstones, sandstones and mudstones of the Carmel Formation.
