location
Arches National Park. Near Moab (Grand County, Utah, US)notes These erosional features were formed by the weathering and enlargement of vertical fractures in the deeply jointed Entrada Sandstone. The formation is actually horizontal but erosion and expansion of vertical fractures create these fins. The Fin Canyon area is on the northeast flank of the Salt Valley anticline, the major structure responsible for most of the joint-controlled features in the park. The jointing here is parallel to the axis of the anticline, located about 2 miles behind the camera.keywords: Entrada Sandstone, geology, earth science, fin, jointing, erosion, Jurassic, Mesozoic
