INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Feb 20, 2011
  • location   Fossil Canyon, Coyote Mountains (Imperial/San Diego County, California, US)
  • family Polygonaceae
  • notes   Detail of the perianths within a single involucre of the annual desert buckwheat Eriogonum thomasii. Note the characteristic upturned edges of the bases of the lobes in the un-fully opened perianths. This is most pronounced in bud, where the bases of the perianth lobes appear ''swollen chordate'' (as described in many keys), and becomes less pronounced (sometimes unnoticeable) in the fully opened flowers.
