INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  May 15, 2008
  • location   West of Carrizo Plains (San Luis Obispo County, California, US)
  • family Polemoniaceae
  • notes   Eriastrum pluriflorum ssp. pluriflorum has corollas with a long tube and a short, almost non-existent, throat. The filaments alternate with the corolla lobes and are attached just below the sinuses of the lobes. In many polemones, the base of the throat (seen externally as the area where the cylindrical tube begins to discernably flare out) is precisely where the stamens are attached on the interior of the corolla. In this case, the filaments are adnate (i.e. fused) to the corolla below their point of attachment, making it appear as if they might be attached further down on the tube...but they aren't. Not recognizing that subtlety can lead to a misidentification here.

Many thanks to David Gowen for clarifying morphology for me and assistance with ID.
