notes Disclaimer: I find Gilia a difficult genus to correctly key to species (or subspecies). Below is a somewhat detailed explanation of my ID attempt here. If you, dear reader, have expertise and experience with this taxon and can correct, confirm, or otherwise meaningfully comment...please email me!! I'll be much obliged :-)
I believe this is G. brecciarum ssp. neglecta, based on my best interpretation of the following characters from the new Jepson key and species descriptions. The bold emphases below are mine.
The critical junctures from the key (with corresponding couplet numbers in brackets) are: [1'] Flowers not in heads; [10'] not G. stellata...no white, sharply bent, acute-tipped basal leaf hairs; [11] Cauline lvs (particularly mid- to upper lvs) clasping or expanded at base; [12] Corolla 10-35 mm, 2-7 x calyx...and alternate lead in couplet gives subsequent leads and species descriptions that don't seem to fit well; [13] While the stem is not apparently ''tufted-woolly-hairy below middle'', it is clear that the stem is not glabrous, but rather quite glandular-puberulent; and [14] Corolla 10-20 mm, throat widely tapered (widely V-shaped); fr +/- = calyx ..... G. brecciarum subsp. neglecta.
After reading many of the species descriptions, trying to see if I could eliminate alternatives I might have missed (i.e. due to possible errors in my interpreting the key) I found the following characters in the description of G. b. ssp. neglecta reassuring and/or persuasive:
(1) Corolla 10-20 mm, throat widely tapered (widely V-shaped); fr +/- = calyx;
(2) Upper cauline lf lobes gen finger-like, terminal lobe wider than lateral;
(4) Inflorescence: flowers clustered; pedicel glands dense, minute, black, stalked;
(5) Calyx 2.5–6 mm, lobes spreading, acute, thick, densely fine-black-glandular, wider than membranes, membranes gen purple-tinged;
(6) Corolla tube generally (i.e. not necessarily?) exserted (it isn't here), purple, throat widely V-shaped, lower 1/2 purple, white above, yellow-spotted, lobes 3–5.7 mm, white, tips lavender; stamens, style exserted.
