  • notes   A rayless layia with two aberrant ray flowers. This individual was also photographed by Aaron Schusteff (on the same visit) whose photos are also on Calphotos. Another Layia discoidea plant within 10 feet had three aberrant ray flowers. Layia discoidea is the only species in the genus Layia that lacks ray flowers. It is unclear if the expression of ray flowers in these Layia discoidea individuals is the result of environment or mutation. Layia glandulosa is believed to be the progenitor of Layia discoidea (work of Bruce Baldwin, UC. Berkeley). Layia glandulosa typically has populations that have either pure white ray flowers or deep yellow (same color as disc) ray flowers. Populations of Layia glandulosa neareest to Layia discoidea typically have deep yellow ray flowers. It is interesting that the aberrant ray flowers of Layia discoidea are intermediate in color (light yellow).
