INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jun 1, 2010
  • latitude 36.31607   longitude -120.64123     View on Google Maps.
  • location   Condon Peak; BLM Clear Creek Management Area; San Benito county; California; USA (San Benito County, California, US)
  • family Asteraceae
  • order Asterales
  • class Magnoliopsida
  • plant community   Shale outcrop
  • notes   This is a population of Layia discoidea that grows on shale rather than the typical serpentine rock outcrop, serpentine scree, or serpentine alluvial stream terrace habitat. Other typical 'strict' serpentine endemics including Quercus durata and Camissonia benitensis also grow on shale in this area (a zone of edaphic infidelity). The soil has been chemically analyzed and has a Ca:Mg molar ratio ~ 3.0 (a 'normal' ratio and much more Ca than typically found in serpentine soil). Most serpentine soils are in the range of Ca:Mg molar 0.5 (very calcium deficient). The typical serpentine endemics may be growing in this area since the soils mimic serpentine soils in other key chemical aspects such as macronutrient deficiency (N,P,K).
