INFORMATION PROVIDED WITH THE PHOTO
  • date of photo  Jul 24, 2010
  • location   Yosemite Creek area. Yosemite National Park. (Mariposa County, California, US)
  • notes   Large masses of granite in the Sierra often develop joints that are parallel to an exposed surface, breaking the rock into sheets. The exfoliation, or peeling away of the outer sheets through weathering and erosion, give the granite domes of Yosemite their characteristic rounded shape. Sheeting joints are exposed here in a road cut along Tioga Road near Yosemite Creek.
