habitat on Aristolochia californica, pipevine plants - the only food of this caterpillar (larva)notes A more specific name for this California form is Battus philenor hirsuta, Hairy Pipevine Swallowtail (or Hairy Blue Swallowtail). This larva is beginning to rear up and display its horns to fend off an enemy.
